Helena Hartwig’s husband, Edward, would often describe his wife as a person highly sensitive to people’s looks, and would stress her extraordinary skill in portrait-making. Many a time, her relatives and closest friends, including her daughters, Danuta and Ewa, posed for her. The title Hartwig gave the work, Young Generation, may refer not only to the age of the girls, but also - in broader metaphoric terms - to the generation which is to rebuild Poland after the war.
