In 1999 he graduated from the Faculty of Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Photography is his main medium: he creates photo conceptual works, manipulates the image digitally, and constructs three dimensional objects from the photography. Many of his photographic projects involved co-working with Aneta Grzeszczykowska, with whom he forms a duo also in private life. Smaga is interested in the possibility for observing something not visible through the photographic image and the illusiveness of photography. He also documents expositions. In 2005 the duo Grzeszczykowska and Smaga was nominated for the Deutsche Bank’s award ‘Spojrzenia’, and in 2006 - for ‘Polityka’s’ passports. The duo had multiple individual expositions, including those at Raster Gallery, the Polish Institute in Duesseldorf and in Austrian Kunsthaus Graz. Moreover, Smaga and Grzeczykowska showed their works at collective expositions, including at Warsaw’s Zacheta, Miami Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum in Karlsruhe, and New Museum in New York City.
