The author about the series: "Concrete is like a reproach in the fairy-tale scenery of the Black Sea. It reminds us that changes proceed at a slow pace. Concrete resembles Ukraine, which strives to change, but keeps stagnant. It is as if concrete succeeded in filling not only the external but also the internal space. Only a few years after the Orange Revolution, the people have already lost hope that it will ever be better. The entire Soviet Union used to spend their holidays at Black Sea resorts, leaving behind nothing but Soviet architecture, mentality and sentiment".
The series won many prestigious prizes in 2009, including the Grand Prize for the dummy of The Black Sea of Concrete book, Photography Book Now, New York, USA; 2nd Prize for a picture story in the category Science/Natural History, Pictures of the Year International; 1st prize for a photo story in the Nature category, Grand Press Photo.
