In the 1960s, Lewczyński would obsessively photograph plaques of deteriorating graves. Thus he created his series Cimiteria, which is dedicated to the topic of memory. When visiting graveyards, he would also take pictures of discarded and decaying tomb sculptures, like the one depicted here. His Backyard Angel is another work that shows a similar motif and was made at about the same time.
The Museum in Gliwice owns another print of the same work, which bears the German title Nachsinnen (Lost in Thought) and is dated 1970, and a print with a wider crop used for previewing.
