In his artistic practice, Althamer has often constructed capsules, astronautical instruments, and spacesuits with the aim of finding a means of escape from everyday life. The titular UFO, the object shown in the photographs, was created in 2004 near the village of Toporów, 30 km away from the German border. Althamer made this work as part of the exhibition entitled What happens in my flat while I’m out? He was one of sixteen artists invited to take part in the show, which was organised by the curators Caroline Eggel and Christiane Rekade in Berlin. The way the artist and the technical staff in the photographs placed the 7-metre-high structure was to ensure that it could be seen from trains travelling between Warsaw and Berlin.
