He tested his photography skills from an early age - his father ran a studio in Moscow and then in Lublin. His first individual exhibition was held as early as in 1929. Finding an interest in painting, he studied at the Graphisches Institut in Vienna during the years 1932-1934. He was the chief representative of the Lublin Photographic Society founded in 1936. In his photographic works, he remained under the influence of Jan Bulhak and other artists from the Vilnius Photoclub. He reached for non-silver techniques in his photographic practice, including gold-bromine in his photographs of Kazimierz on the Vistula river. He specialized in impressionistic landscapes of the surroundings of Lublin and in genre scenes rooted in the painting tradition. In 1944, he was sent to a gulag in the USSR and took up residence in Warsaw upon his return in 1946. His works from the post-war period are characterized by a synthesis of abstraction and surrealism, with minimal narration. One of the leading representatives of socialist realism. He undertook attempts at color photography at the end of his life. His work had a significant influence on the Kielce Landscape School and on the Zero 61 group from Torun, among others.
