Poddębski made this photograph at a time when most artists were following the pictorial tradition. Unlike them, he was a proponent of straight photography, hence the clear contrast and absence of softness in the image. The artist documented Poland on the numerous trips he made together with Mieczysław Orłowicz, in the 1920s and 1930s, to gather material for a series of guidebooks - the earliest such publications in the pre-war Poland.
