Majak was the first artist in Poland to use the zone plate. The exposure time was approx. 5 minutes. "A zone plate consists of radially symmetric rings, which alternate between opaque and transparent. It works by blocking rays of light, which diffract around the Fresnel zones and, as a result of the interference, dim parts of the image." (Katarzyna Majak, Zone Plate, Fotografia quarterly 11/2003). The resulting images have the softness of pinhole photography and show a characteristic halo effect.
