In addition to landscape and people, theatre is among the three major themes explored by Edward Hartwig. The artist took up theatrical photography in the 1950s, which had a huge impact on his work. He started to use photocollage, photomontage, solarisation to give his works an air of unreality, rendering them surreal or even abstract in their mood. As he himself said: "In a sense, theatre is an artificial entity, and I am permeated with this artificiality, so beautiful and splendid..."
The works have been widely exhibited and reproduced; the ones on the left-hand side and in the middle were shown at the exhibition Edward Hartwig (1909-2003). Photographs, which was the first monographic show of photography at the National Museum in Warsaw (2004). They were also reproduced in the exhibition catalogue.
