Dorota Buczkowska’s ‘A Practical guide for surviving an emotional storm by the water’ is the extension of her earlier cycle ‘One year in a sanatorium’. In the previous cycle she created exceptional photographic collages. In ‘A practical guide...’ she performs drawing incursions, which make them unique.
For the author it was important to lose the frontier between the new and the historical, the real and the fictional, in order to be able to show a universal story about emotions in some natural circumstances, unchangeable and influencing the relations between people.
She studied at the Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts: at the Faculty of Preservation and Restoration of the Pieces of Art, and at the Faculty of Sculpture, in the famous ‘Kowalnia’ - the atelier of professor Grzegorz Kowalski. She also studied at the Centre National des Arts Plastiques Villa Arson in Nice and at the University of Warsaw, where she completed Gender Studies. She works with different media: painting, drawing, installations, and video. Through metaphor, her works address the topics of passing, the erosion of matter and physiological processes. Individual expositions of the artist were presented in galleries of Warsaw many times. Moreover, her individual exposition was part of the Liverpool Biennale in 2009. Buczkowska’s works took part in many collective expositions: at Zacheta in Warsaw and Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Arsenal Gallery in Poznan, and at museums and galleries in Tel Aviv, Paris, Vienna and at the Biennale of Contemporary Sculpture in Australia. She lives and works in Warsaw.
