This photograph is one of the most easily recognizable photographs in the artist’s oeuvre. The high contrast - which is characteristic of his work in the 1950s and 1960s - reveals the interest he had at that time in the relationship between photography and graphic art. Hartwig published his famous Fotografika album (Arkady, 1960) during this period, pairing graphically similar photographs, thus defining a new quality of photographic publications.
The work has been widely exhibited and reproduced, including: Fotografika (Arkady, 1960), Edward Hartwig (1909-2003): Photographs - exhibition catalogue cover (National Museum in Warsaw, 2004).
