At first, photography was just a hobby for Leonard Sempolinski. He officially debuted as a photographer in 1938, during the 'The Beauty of Vilnius and of the Vilnius Region' (Polish: 'Piekno Wilna i Ziemi Wilenskiej') exhibition. After the war, he had a photography shop in the Praga district of Warsaw. In 1946, he co-founded the Association of Polish Art Photographers, and in 1947 - the Polish Photography Association. He made photographic documentation of many Polish cities and towns, and their vicinities. He realized Jan Bulhak's concept of 'fatherland photography'. He also did photo-reportages and took experimental photographs. He received many awards, in Poland and abroad.
