In 1956, Schlabs` photograms, which form a series of abstract works, earned the artist a reputation as one of the most interesting figures in Polish art. When the next year Schlabs organised the international exhibition named A Step into Contemporaneity in the Gallery of the Photographic Society in Poznań, the works shown there represented an utterly new approach to the photographic medium. Subjected to various types of interference by being cut, heated up, pasted onto various materials, the negatives produced abstract forms, falling outside the traditional understanding of photographic art.
