Volker Hinz photographs politicians, artists, stars and ordinary people, scrutinising them, on the one hand, and keeping a distance, on the other. Thus Hinz`s work becomes a unique visual chronicle of his time. Born in Hamburg, Hinz learnt how to use a camera during his army service. Since then, he has built his career as an independent press photographer. When aged only 24, he took charge of a photographic agency in Bonn, Germany, to join Stern three years later. Soon, he left for New York, where for eight years he was responsible for material covering the United States and South America. The works he made at the time won him international renown and acclaim. The naked soccer players Beckenbauer and Pelé under the shower, Woody Allen ordering himself to be quiet, a rarely shy Muhammad Ali trying to make a late comeback, the author William S. Burroughs with a pistol in his hand or the film director Federico Fellini with double eyes on his head - these are just a few of his famous portraits.
