In her Patterns series the artist develops her own variations of existing designs taken from different epochs, traditions and cultures. While retaining the overall structure of each pattern, she makes her own version of it, exploiting motifs that have already appeared previously in her works. She uses the textile patterns of William Morris, meticulous stylistics of Arab ornamentation, batik clothing patterns and Chinese floral decoration. Each of the patterns is composed of a multiplied motif of the human figure taken from Kulik`s set of photographs entitled Archive of Gestures (1987-1991). Patterns are square-shaped to resemble pieces of fabric taken from upholstery sample books. This is connected with the artist`s passion for collecting and archiving representations of reality and art.
