In 1931, Wladyslaw Slawny emigrated from Lodz to Paris where he devoted himself to photography. During World War II, he joined the Polish army in France and fought in the Battles of Narvik as a soldier of the Polish Independent Highland Brigade. Since 1945, he managed the photography department of the 'Gazeta Polska' newspaper published in Paris. In 1950, he came to Poland to create a team of news photographers for a new illustrated weekly, 'Swiat'. He managed the photography department of that newspaper until 1957 when he decided to return to Paris. In France, he continued working as a photojournalist, for the Polish newspapers and as an independent photographer. In 1950, he became a member of the Association of Polish Photographers (later: Association of Polish Art Photographers). On March 17, 1968 he was excluded from it.
