Ewa RUBINSTEIN (ur. 1933)

Packs with Cloths, a Textile Factory, Łódź

1984
gelatin silver print, 15.4 × 23.2 cm (20 × 25.2 cm),

Handled in the tranquil manner that is characteristic of the artist, this photograph is a record of an atmospheric scene, and at the same time, a portrait of the city Rubinstein undertook to document. Łódź, also known as the Polish Manchester, had become the greatest centre of the textile industry in the Kingdom of Poland (early 19th-century), and the second-largest - after Moscow - textile centre in the Russian Empire. Łódź flourished thanks to the industry.
Publication: album Łódź - Momentary Meetings (Wojciech Grochowalski, 2007).
Exhibited in Łódź (1998), Paris (1999), Philadelphia (1999), and New York (2002).
