Jan DZIACZKOWSKI (1983-2011)

Night Watch

before 2007
collage, 8 x 18.3 cm (21 x 28.5 cm),
unique object

In addition to illustration and painting, Dziaczkowski specialised in collages, most of which display a large dose of humour, and the artist’s masterful skill in combining different worlds. As in this work, Dziaczkowski would often combine motifs taken from traditional painting (Watchman by Józef Chełmoński, reproduction from the masterpieces of Polish 20th-century-art portfolio) and graphics, making them appear a perfect match for each other.
The collage, a technique yielding one-of-a-kind artworks, was highly appreciated by the Dadaists, and has seen a revival recently as an expression of people’s longing for the materiality of photography at a time of omnipresent digital technologies.
