This photograph was made in Fortin de Las Flores, Mexico, in Spring 2011. Together with another work entitled Neon Juliet, it forms a diptych belonging to Gomulicki’s ongoing Auto-da-fé series. In Portuguese, the phrase means an "act of faith" and refers to a verbal declaration made in public on the adoption or rejection of the Catholic faith in an Inquisition process. When staging his photographs, Gomulicki balances on the verge of visual kitsch, thus playing with well-established cultural and historical symbolism.
