The author about the photograph: "This was the summer of 1982. The first summer under martial law. I was working on an assignment about the city of Wroclaw for the German monthly GEO, and decided to widen the scope of my coverage by driving out to the nearby countryside. I stopped when I saw a family working hard, harvesting wheat and noticed a woman who - because of the heat - was starting to undress. However, in her hand she still held a sickle..."
The photograph was recognised as one of 42 Polish photographic icons in a plebiscite organised in 2012 by The DOC Foundation. At the time, it was presented at the exhibition Polish Photo Icons. Seaching/Voting at the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery in Cracow during the Photomonth festival.
This work has been exhibited and published numerous times, among others on the cover of the photographer`s album Socialist Poland. The Props (BOSZ, 2004).
