The person in this portrait made by Dorys, an acclaimed portrait photographer, is Jadwiga Pate, also known as Heddi Pate. She was married to an American millionaire, a businessman and humanitarian, founder and first director of UNICEF - Maurice Pate. She arouse public interest with her eccentric way of living. She could be seen, nearly every day, driving her green Packard or riding a horse. She was among the first women in Warsaw who wore trousers on a daily basis and held a driving license. After the war, she committed herself to rebuilding the capital city and to charity for war victims. She did public benefit work as a member of various commissions and committees, including the Child and Youth Aid Committee of the Ministry of Education, and the Polish Committee for Rehabilitation of Invalids.
