Janina Turowska, who was for some time Witkacy’s lover, is - in addition to the artist himself - the protagonist of this photograph, which is among his best-known ones. It was taken in collaboration with Władysław Jan Grabski as one of a set of improvised scenes in Zakopane. It refers to topical news at the time, namely the crimes of a serial killer, who became the model for the German drama-thriller film directed by Fritz Lang M (1931). The plot of the film is based on the true story of child murderer Peter Kürten (Vampire of Düsseldorf).
The photograph has been reproduced, among others, in: Against Nothingness. Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s Photographs (Wydawnictwo Literackie, 1986); Witkacy and Others. From the Collection of Stefan Okołowicz and Ewa Franczak (Profile Foundation and Wilanów Palace Museum, Warsaw, 2011).
The photograph has been widely exhibited in Poland and abroad.
