Ewa Kuryluk refers to her pictures as autophotography. Since she was 13, Kuryluk has kept a photographic diary, which was considered for some time as too intimate to be shown to the public. The diary is quite peculiar, as the scenes are staged, with the costumes and props chosen meticulously. Kuryluk used some of the photographs for her painting. She showed her self-portraits for the first time in 2000, in Cracow`s Artemis Gallery, and then exhibited over 300 of them during the 2003 retrospective in Warsaw`s Zachęta.
