Writing started to appear in Lewczyński’s photographs in the mid-1950s. He would reproduce both official documents and children’s school notes, as well as accidental scribbles. In the monograph dedicated to the artist Jerzy Lewczyński. Memory of the Image (Museum in Gliwice, 2012), Wojciech Nowicki quotes after Adam Sobota: "for Lewczyński - literally and metaphorically, an image is like writing, and writing is like an image, as many of his photographs are images of writing." All this contributes to Lewczyński’s story about communication and the various codes we use in it.
