Łódź Kaliska Tile from the Łódź Kaliska Sisters series

1999
ceramic tile, 20 x 25 x 0.5 cm,
signed and dated "1990" by Łódź Kaliska artists
unspecified edition (one of the last tiles)

In 1999, when Łódź Kaliska was celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Museum of Art in Łódź made one of its lavatories available to the Group for a permanent exhibition. To decorate the walls, the Group designed a ceramic tile with a reproduction of their Łódź Kaliska Sisters (1989) photograph, which is a pastiche of the painting Gabrielle d’Estrées et une de ses soeurs by an anonymous artist of the Fontainebleau school (1594). The lavatory, known as Pure Art, has survived until today. Members of the public can use it and, at the same time, contemplate Łódź Kaliska’s art. Sitting on the lavatory, you can read digressions about the freedom of art, which are written on the reverse of the painting Freiheit? Nein, Danke. Bis. In 1999, the remaining Sister tiles were used to decorate the lavatories of the new floor that was added to the Łódź Kaliska Club at 102 Piotrkowska Street in Łódź.
