Krzysztof PRUSZKOWSKI (ur. 1943)

Laurence à Kazimierz (Photosintesis)

1992/1993
gelatin silver print, 45 x 30.7 cm,
signed, dated and described on the front

Pruszkowski took this photograph in Kazimierz nad Wisłą using the photosynthesis method, which became emblematic of his work. The method involves superimposing photographs with a similar theme onto one another. The resultant works are deprived of clear contour and become unreal. As Pruszkowski says, unlike boring "mono-pose" photographs, a photosynthesis or a "multi-pose" photograph is a system which shows, within a single image, a number of things that are either similar in form or have something in common in conceptual terms. By seeing reality through multiple layers the artist rejects the routine, superficial perception of things and forces the viewer to look beyond the physical surface of the object being scrutinised.
