photosynthesis, gelatin silver print, 55 x 38 cm (59 x 44 cm),
signed, dated and described on the front
The work was made in May 2011 during Obama`s visit to Poland. At the time, Pruszkowski showed it in the window display of the Fotosynteza Gallery in the European Hotel in Warsaw. In 2013, he also exhibited it in a display window opposite the US Embassy in Warsaw. The work was removed after protests from the owner of the window, who considered Pruszkowski`s gesture to be a provocation.
The photosynthesis method consists in superimposing photographs with a similar motif on one another. The resultant works are deprived of clear contour and become unreal. As Pruszkowski says, unlike boring "mono-pose" photographs, a photosynthesis or a "multi-pose" photograph is a system which shows, within a single image, a number of things that are either similar in form or have something in common in conceptual terms. By seeing reality through multiple layers the artist rejects the routine, superficial perception of things and forces the viewer to look beyond the physical surface of the object being scrutinised.
