Lewczyński’s self-portraits represent a major achievement in his art. They include both works that are serious in tone and many comical, often sarcastic, ones. As Adam Mazur observes in his review of the book Jerzozwierz. Portraits and Self-Portraits of Jerzy Lewczyński (Museum in Gliwice, 2012), "[...] when making the faces Lewczyński goes even further than Witkacy, developing his own unique Lewczyński-like style." The work In the Eyes of Friends is one of a series of photomontages with Lewczyński in a characteristic costume in the centre of the picture.
