In the 1970s, Kuryluk was living an itinerant life with her then partner Helmut, staying in rented rooms and friends’ artistic studios. As she remembers, "we would also stay at my mom’s, working in a room with a crown of thorns blossoming on one of the sills."
This self-portrait was made in her mother’s apartment in Frascati Street. After returning from New York, the artist worked on her book Hyperrealism - New Realism (Wydawnictwo Artystyczne i Filmowe,1979).
