Andrzej Artur MROCZEK (ur. 1936)

In a Hollow

1956-1957
gelatin silver print, 30 × 29.8 cm,
signed, dated, titled and artist’s stamp on the reverse
vintage print

The photograph was taken in Warsaw, opposite the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology. At the time, Mroczek was an active member of the Polish Photographic Society. The work was chosen for a portfolio the Society sent to numerous exhibitions of amateur art photography. It was also commented on by Urszula Czartoryska in the Fotografia monthly: "In this photograph, the artist reveals [...] his skill in enriching his visual work with a title - a title that does not just serve cataloguing purposes, but is meaningful and makes an important, though microscopic, literary contribution. A hollow! You cannot but associate it with a cosy nest, stressing even more the static square format of the photograph, the closing of the image within the shop window frame, the confinement of the invalid within the small window, and the physical lock on the kiosk."
