The series is part of Sputnik`s IS(not) project. Adam Pańczuk and his companion, the Icelandic writer Sindri Freysson, investigated the impact of local mythology on the mentality of the islanders. Folk beliefs in Iceland are highly individual and have many local varieties. In Icelandic legends elves or hidden people have good intentions and are favourably inclined towards people - they give humans presents or warn against danger. The result of a survey show that 62% of Icelanders believe that it is possible, likely or certain that elves and hidden people do actually exist.
The series won 2nd Prize in the Portrait Series category of the Pictures of the Year International (2011).
IS(not) exhibitions in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Iceland and Ireland.
Publications: Marie Claire, Italy; Esquire, Russia; Duży Format, Gazeta Wyborcza and the IS(not) book, Sputnik Photos (2011).
