The doyen of the Polish photography Since 1919, Jan Bulhak taught inthe Artistic Photography Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts of theStefan Batory University in Vilnius. He is a philosopher and theoreticianof photography. He founded the Vilnius Photography Club (1927) andco-founded the Polish Photography Club. He was a representativeof pictorialism. He is known for many great photograms. In hisphotographs, we can discern the influence of graphics and painting. Bulhak has made photographic documentation of the architecture of Vilnius, Warsaw, Cracow, Grodno, Zamosc, Lublin, Kazimierz, and othertowns and cities. 158 albums on the cities and regions of the Second Polish Republic were created in Bulhak's photographic studio. In July 1944, during the fights for Vilnius, the studio was burnt, together with 50,000 catalogued negatives, mainly presenting Vilnius and the regionbut also many other Polish and some German locations. After WorldWar II, Bulhak and his son documented the destruction of many Polishtowns and cities. Bulhak co-founded the Association of Polish ArtPhotographers and had membership card number one.
