In the 1980s, Hartwig was the honorary chairman of the artistic board of Mała Galeria ZPAF-CCA. In 1983, he organised his first exhibition there under the meaningful title Protective Zones, which was an allusion to the planned closure of the gallery for hosting a controversial programme, which Hartwig wanted to prevent. The exhibition featured this photograph, which shows a sculpture from the Łazienki Royal Gardens in Warsaw.
