Bułhak came to Vilnius in the summer of 1915 and stayed there, unable to leave the city. Initially, he took his photographs from hiding. Later, he undertook to make a photographic "inventory" of Lithuania comprising buildings, interiors, and portraits. This work comes from a series of staged documentary photographs taken in charity eating places for the poor founded by Wincenty Łubieński, including a set of portraits depicting the diners.
A similar picture showing the same situation was published in the catalogue of the exhibition Jan Bułhak. A Photographer (National Museum in Warsaw, 2007) under the title Vilnius Eating Places, Hungry Children.
