1948/2014
6 gelatin silver prints, 48 x 32.5 cm - each,
edition: 1/5
The series was produced for a documentary and art photography competition announced by the Ministry of Culture and Science. After testing a number of chemical experiments, the artist decided to capture the mixing of two liquids with contrasting colours: water and ink. The series as a whole was given an award at the 2nd National Photographic Competition in Poznań in 1949. These prints, made very recently from Obrąpalska`s original negatives dating back to 1948, reveal the artist`s distinct creative method by means of which she produced such much-celebrated works as Dancer, Curse and Silence, shown at the 1st Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Kraków (December 1948).
Exhibition: Fortunata Obrąpalska. Between Pictorialism and Experimentation, 9/11 Art Space Foundation, Poznań (2014). The work was also reproduced in the book that accompanied the exhibition.
