This is one of Bułhak`s photographs which prove the value of his declaration that "we look for an ideal in painting and for models in graphics". As the proponent of the word fotografika (refined photography), Bułhak stressed that photography can successfully compete with graphic arts and painting. The work shown here represents the essence of Bułhak`s aesthetics, which is based on the play of light and shadow. It also exemplifies the prevailing fashion in landscape photography of the time which consisted in the presentation of fragmentary landscape following the single motif theory which was proposed by Bułhak. The work is very likely to have been prepared for an exhibition.
