Painter, photographer, graphic and performance artist, creator of structures and installations. He studied at the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Łódź (1974-1975). Graduate of the Institute of Artistic Education at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, and from 1979, lecturer at its Institute of Fine Art Education. He is known for his site-specific installations and B&W photographs resembling abstract paintings. Awards: Stanisław Wyspiański Artistic Prize (1990), statutory prize at the Triennial of Polish Graphic Art (1991), first prize at the Drawing Triennial in Wrocław (1992), European Photography Award, Berlin (1992). Numerous individual exhibitions: in Lublin, Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, Katowice, Cracow, Lyon, San Diego, New York and Berlin. Smoczyński participated in over 200 group exhibitions, among others, in Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań, Wrocław, Łódź, Lublin, Paris, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Southampton, Istanbul, Berlin, Vienna and Barcelona. Works in numerous collections and modern art galleries.

Mikołaj Smoczyński focused on studying issues related to places, surfaces and spaces. His photographic works presenting isolated and separated fragments of reality - pieces of a wall, concrete floor or falling plaster - in a painterly manner focus on the aesthetics of raw materials.
