Graduate of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. In the 50s, his works - attempting to capture the mutual relationships of carefully composed, symbolic objects and to create a commentary on daily life in this way - were called ‘anti-photography’, while he himself is inclined to call his activities the ‘theatre of photography’. Over time, he became focused on activities he called ‘photographic archaeology’ - he began using works by other authors in his own work, reproductions - forgotten, destroyed, finding in them a symbol of a maltreated past, signs of the touch of human hands or eyes. He presented his work at such exhibitions as ‘Subjective photography’ (1968) and ‘Searching photographers’ (1971), ‘Boundary states of photography’ (1977). In 1988-1993, he lectured at the Higher School of Photography of the Association of Polish Art Photographers in Warsaw. Author of the ‘Anthology of Polish photography 1839-1989’ (1999). Lewczynski’s influences can be felt in photographs by other artists, including Wojciech Prazmowski.
