In his art, Smoczyński would often focus on issues related to space and place. He photographed his installations, and treated the photographs as autonomous artworks. Given the impermanence of his site-specific objects, it is photographs that have come to represent a significant portion of his artistic output. When reviewing the exhibitions Mikołaj Smoczyński - Retrospectively (Lublin, 2011) in the Dwutygodnik bi-weekly, Karol Sienkiewicz quotes the artist`s words, who would say: "an exhibition is good, when it looks good in a photograph".
