Hartwig often photographed the Polish theatre and its personalities. This photograph, which is an example of the many formal experiments pursued by the artist, depicts the famous Polish film and theatre director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016). Wajda was one of the most distinguished and popular Polish directors and a co-founder of the Polish Film School. He was also the first filmmaker in the history of Polish cinema to receive the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award in 2000.
