In his staged photographs from the 1930s, Witkacy produced group paratheatre and film-like scenes - some limited to mimic grimaces and some taking the form of elaborate narration. Janina Turowska, who was the artist’s lover, was among the large group of his acquaintances who took active part in his photographic experiments, including photographic sessions. This photograph was taken in Zakopane in collaboration with Władysław Jan Grabski.
It has been widely shown in Poland and abroad, and reproduced in the following publications: Against Nothingness. Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s Photographs (Wydawnictwo Literackie, 1986); Witkacy and Others. From the Collection of Stefan Okołowicz and Ewa Franczak (Profile Foundation and Wilanów Palace Museum, Warsaw, 2011).
