Edward Hartwig was interested in photography since his early years. His father had a photographic studio in Moscow and then in Lublin. Hartwig's individual exhibition was organized as early as 1929. Being interested in painting, Hartwig studied in the Graphisches Institut in Vienna, in 1932-34. He was the main representative of the Lublin Photography Association, founded in 1936. His photographic work was influenced by Jan Bulhak and other artists from the Vilnius Photography Club circle. Hartwig worked with the use of the so-called 'noble' techniques, for example, gold-bromide in the photographs of Kazimierz nad Wisla. He specialized in impressionistic landscapes of the vicinity of Lublin and in painting-inspired genre scenes. In 1944, he was imprisoned in a USSR lager. He returned in 1946 and lived in Warsaw. His post-war works are characterized by a synthesis of abstraction and surrealism, and minimized narration. Hartwig was one of the main representatives o social realism. At the end of his life, he experimented with colour photography. His art had a significant influence on, among other artists, the photographers of the Kielce School of Landscape and of the Zero 61 group from Torun.
