The photograph depicts a worker in the Hesse foundry in Lublin. Hartwig attended school in Lublin and had the first contact with photography in his father’s studio. Even though he spent most of his life in Warsaw, he would return to Lublin on multiple occasions. He published several albums with photographs depicting the city and portraits of its residents as a result of those returns. Apart from the one presented here, he made a set of other portraits of the same worker, taken from a greater distance.
