Lublin was close to Hartwig’s heart, so quite naturally, the artist made it a frequent subject in his photography. He arrived there from Moscow in 1917, when he was 8 years old. It was there that he attended school and had his first contact with photography in his father’s studio. Even though he spent most of his life in Warsaw, he would return to Lublin on multiple occasions. As a result of those return visits, he published four albums dedicated to the city, including: Lublin and its Environs. A Reminiscence (Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej, 1997), and had a dozen or so thematic exhibitions, not only in Lublin.
