This self-portrait of Józef Robakowski exemplifies the style characteristic of the avant-garde group Zero-61 from Toruń, which the artist was member of. The group was a bottom-up student movement and followed no specific artistic agenda. Their main goal was to search for new techniques and formal solutions, with most of the works produced at the time invoking symbolism, early expressionism, and the metaphysics of Jacek Malczewski`s painting. Some other members of the group were: Czesław Kuchta, Lucjan Oczkowski, Jerzy Wardak, Wiesław Wojczulanis, Andrzej Różycki, Wojciech Bruszewski, Michał Kokot, Antoni Mikołajczyk.
