This photograph was taken on the Vistula River and dates to Hartwig`s early period, when the artist remained faithful to pictorialism, the prevalent style at the time. Over the years, his works evolved, but his love of landscape never passed. Summarising his achievements forty years later, Hartwig said: "I was bargaining hard with landscape trying to find how much of its character, truth and mood it will let me capture - in a split second - and transfer to a single photo, how many secrets it will reveal, how much of the closeness I have always dreamt of it will give me" (Edward Hartwig. My Land, Sport i Turystyka, 1962).
